Adventure and the great outdoors can often be intimidating.
Bolt and Keel, cats and adventure enthusiasts, have come up with 8 tips to help you be a better adventurer and to have the ultimate outdoor experience.
1. Bring an Adventure Buddy
Good company always equates to good times on any adventure, especially when he or she is someone you trust. Adventure buddies are always there for you and can help you get out of sticky situations.
2. Come Prepared For Weather
There’s never bad weather, just poor choice in gear. Do some research beforehand and make sure you have what you need, even if you end up just carrying your extra layers and sun protection with you, at least you were prepared! Nothing is worse than getting soaked because you didn’t think it was going to rain.
3. Always Pack Your 10 Essentials
The great outdoors can be unpredictable. When you pack your 10 essentials you can help yourself survive and thrive. Read more about the 10 essentials here, in the meantime here’s a list to get you started:
- Food and Water
- Navigation Tools
- Extra Clothing
- Fire Starter
- Shelter (tarp/tent)
- Signalling Device
- First Aid Kit
- Weather Protection
- A Light Source
4. Safety Always Comes First
Like we said earlier, nature can be unpredictable. Unfortunately, you can’t always outsmart weather, natural disasters, or simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. That’s why safety should always come first, or at least be aware of what your risks are.
5. Practice Leave No Trace
Minimize your impact on our beautiful earth, that way we all can enjoy it! Here are the 7 principles of Leave No Trace to learn and live by:
- Plan Ahead and Prepare
- Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
- Dispose of Waste Properly
- Leave What You Find
- Minimize Fire Impacts
- Respect Wildlife
- Be Considerate to Other Visitors
6. Push Your Comfort Zone
Facing fears, pushing yourself physically, and ultimately stepping outside of your comfort zone is almost always a rewarding experience. When was the last time you tried something new?
7. Don’t Be Afraid To Ask For Help
Being an adventurer is tiring. And if you listened to tip #6, you may have pushed yourself out of your comfort zone. Here is where your adventure buddy comes in. Ask for help! There’s no shame in receiving a helping hand or collectively changing your original goal if things don’t go to plan.
8. Never Underestimate Yourself
You are in the only one in charge of what you can or cannot accomplish. It’s natural to doubt yourself, but don’t let that stop you from at least trying!
A little less intimidating now? We think so.
